1-st Scientific and Technical Conference of the EPOS - European Plate Observing System project

The 1st Scientific and Technical Conference dedicated to the EPOS-PL project (European Plate Observing System) was held on 19-21 November 2018, at the Windsor Hotel in Jachranka – near Warsaw, Poland.

The first day of the conference was dedicated to the main pillars of the EPOS project – the biggest European infrastructural project in Earth Sciences. During first session, Prof. Stanisław Lasocki presented the road of Poland towards integration with EPOS.

Assoc. Prof. Beata Orlecka-Sikora explained the history and integration of the EPOS Thematic Core Service Anthropogenic Hazards, that, currently, is being coordinated by the Institute of Geophysics PAS.

The last presentation in this session was given by representative of a strategic industrial consortium MSc. Adam Barański from Polska Grupa Górnicza S.A. - "The role of PGG S.A. in the EPOS-PL project - our contribution and expectations".

During the afternoon session, the goals and achievements as well as the principles of integration of individual Thematic Core Services included in the European EPOS program were presented. The lectures were given by invited foreign guests, among others:

Ph.D. Pavel Hejda (Institute of Geophysics of the Czech Academy of Sciences),
"Towards integration of geomagnetic data and services into EPOS."

Ph.D Aldo Winkler (National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology, Rome),
"EPOS Multi-Scale Laboratories – sharing experimental data and facilities in Solid Earth Science".

Ph.D. Rui Manuel Fernandes (University of Beira Interior, Space & Earth Geodetic Analysis Laboratory),
"The importance of EPOS to disseminate GNSS data and products in Europe".

Prof. Ramon Hanssen (Delft University of Technology),
"Geodetic monitoring of land deformation on various spatio-temporal scales".

Ph.D. Aleksi Aalto (University of Helsinki),
"TCS Seismology"

At the end of the first day of the conference, Ph.D. Dorota Olszewska (Institute of Geophysics, Polish Academy of Sciences), presented the integration of Research Infrastructure within the implemented EPOS-PL project. The idea of building scientific-research e-platform was given by MSc. Tomasz Szepieniec (Academic Computer Center Cyfronet of the AGH University of Science and Technology in Krakow, ACK Cyfronet AGH). Assoc. Prof. Grzegorz Mutke (Main Mining Institute) acquainted participants of conference with the information on Multidisciplinary Upper Silesian Episode – MUSE, which aims at the practical integration of observations documenting the relations between the geodynamics of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin, underground mining activity and seismicity. This task of EPOS-PL project is supported by the strategic industrial partner - Polish Mining Group.

The second day of the conference was dominated by the Research Infrastructure Fair. The achievements of individual Research Infrastructure Centers of the EOPS-PL project were presented.

Research and analyzes carried out with the use of the Research Infrastructure EPOS-PL were the main topics of the afternoon session of the second day of the conference.

The last day of the conference was filled with meetings in individual thematic tasks. Representatives of entrepreneurs and scientific institutions interested in the Research Infrastructure EPOS-PL were invited to the discussion.
